As all local residents in Edenbridge know, the area is prone to flooding due to its location near the River Eden floodplain. A terrible flood occurred causing a huge amount of damage to the high street in 1958 due to the absence of any flood defences. The river was subsequently dredged to try and prevent another disaster but only 10 years later, the town flooded again.
Thankfully, no one died although according to stories told locally, one man had to be rescued by helicopter because he had been so engrossed in watching The Forsyte Saga on TV, he hadn’t noticed the water rising rapidly outside his home. Fortunately, Edenbridge now has much better flood defences and the locals are more aware of the risks following previous catastrophes.
