Interesting Facts about Bexley
Bexley is host to many beautiful buildings but perhaps one of the most outstanding, due not just to the magnificent architecture but also its stunning gardens, is Hall Place. Located just to the south of Bexleyheath, the current building dates back to approx. 1540 although it has been suggested that prior to that there may have been buildings on the site from as far back as 1241.
A wealthy merchant, Sir John Champenois, who was also Lord Mayor of London purchased Hall Place in 1537 and started to build there somewhere between the years of 1537 and 1540. The house remained in the family until 1649 when it was sold on to another wealthy merchant, Robert Austen, from Tenterden in Kent.
It passed to another family, the Dashwoods in 1772 but they rarely lived there and the building became home to many tenants over the following years including a private school at one time. The Countess of Limerick was also a tenant for some years and was responsible for the now famous Topiaries that adorn parts of the luscious gardens.
The beautiful building was to change hands once more in 1926 when Countess Limerick’s son-in-law purchased it and held it for a few years before selling it on again in 1935 to its current owners, Bexley Council.
Thankfully we can now all enjoy this magnificent mansion as it’s now home to the Bexley Museum and the immaculate gardens are a public open space.
It’s always a pleasure to spend an afternoon rambling around its many rooms admiring the wonderful furnishings and exhibits there before popping outside and having a wander around the perfectly kept, stunning gardens … Don’t forget your picnic basket!
