Geeky Belvedere Facts
Belvedere got its name from the Italian for “beautiful view” (bella vista). The name was coined by Sir Culling Eardley in the mid-1800s, although I’m not sure if he had any connections with Italy.
In October of 1864, there was a massive explosion that completely destroyed two large gunpowder factories that were close to Erith Marshes. The explosion was so large that it also took a couple of barges that were being loaded with gunpowder at the time and was also felt by people in Central London, who assumed it was an earthquake. Although it was a huge blast, only 20 casualties were reported, probably due to the area being in a fairly remote location at the time. The blast created an enormous crater that left no signs of there being buildings on the site previously. Apparently, an eyewitness was quoted as saying that “it was if the place had been swept clean by a broom”.
