Geeky Beckenham Facts
We always like to including a few interesting facts about the areas we serve and if you live in Beckenham, you’ll almost certainly know one of the area’s most famous landmarks – The Chinese Garage. If you think it looks a bit like a petrol station, it’s because it originally was. If you’ve never seen it, it’s located on the roundabout that links Beckenham, Eden Park and Shortlands, where Stone Park Avenue joins the roundabout.
According to long-standing residents of the Beckenham and Bromley area, the Japanese pagoda-style building was once owned by a wealthy family who also owned the adjoining land (the Langley Court Estate). It’s claimed that the family made their fortune in the shipping business and were also underwriters of the infamous Titanic. Consequently, when the Titanic sank, they were ruined and had to sell off much of their assets.
The Chinese Garage was originally built in 1928 and is now Grade II listed. There is some speculation as to why it looks the way it does. Some people claim that the owners (the Bucknells) were inspired by their regular trips to the far east, whilst others suggest it may just have been designed that way on a whim. No evidence can be found either way.
The Chinese Garage won the Better Petrol Stations competition in the 1930s and was still turning heads in 2001 when it won the ‘Most Unusual Garage in England’ award.
