Geeky Barnehurst facts
There wasn’t really much of a Barnehurst until the land was put up for sale and sold in 1881 to build the Bexleyheath loop line between Lewisham and Dartford railway stations. Essentially, the reason for plonking a railway station there first was to encourage development and attract people to the area.
Barnehurst’s name originates from the name of the railway station, which was named after Colonel Barne, who owned May Place House (and was vice-chairman of the railway company). Things really took off in 1926 when the Barnehurst Estate was built.
A really interesting PDF document detailing houses for sale in up-and-coming Barnehurst in the 1930s (the May Place Estate) can be viewed courtesy of the Barnehurst Online website. To give you a taster, the brochure details the cost of a newly built semi-detached house in the area, which could be bought for just £625. If you had a bit more cash, you could pick up a fully detached house WITH a garage for an eye-watering £850!
